Favorite Track: "Mellow My Man"

Least Favorite Track: "Do You Want More?!!!??!"

Through their massive discography that includes thirteen full-length albums, it seems like The Roots have covered pretty much everything. From their psychedelic bars on records like IIIadelph Halflife to their full length orchestra and jazz compositions on Undun, The Roots have kind of been around forever. However, this evolution never would of been possible without their second studio album, the fun-loving, and playful ; Do You Want More?!!!??! This record sits in a very fun and specific place in The Roots catalog as this LP came merely and almost entirely out of jam sessions recorded by The Roots. That sporadic energy most certainly transfers into this records sound (in a good way) and gives it an extremely fun and groovy tone. Not to say their new material is bad by any stretch of the imagination, but a few of the albums that The Roots have put out in this decade have been way too jam packed with features that I wouldn’t say were 100% ideal for the atmosphere the band was striving for. I bring this up due to the the lack of features we see on Do You Want More?!!!??! It seems like every feature is meant to be there and adds something positive to the specific track they are featured in. This in my opinion is what truly makes Do You Want More?!!!??! The most Roots thing that the Roots have ever done (if that makes sense). Along with the features being consistently on point, The Roots follow a very specific song structure on this LP. It is very obvious that at the point in time when this album came out The Roots structured their music almost exclusively around their choruses. These tracks are built from the inside out, with a majority of the songs on the record relying on the presence of a very large, apparent, and usually catchy hook. Im talking about tracks like “Mellow My Man”, “I Remain Calm”, “Datskat”, “Proceed”, and virtually every other track on this record. The raw energy that is spilt all over Do You Want More?!!!??! By ?uestlove and BlackThougut is fun, infectious, and a must-listen for any fans of this style of hiphop or The Roots.
