Spirit of Eden marked a huge transition in the discography of all time great, new wave band, Talk Talk. Opposed to their earlier style that geared more toward lovers of synth-pop, Spirit of Eden sent them into a complete new direction for the last two studio albums they would ever release. This new direction included a sound that was much more influenced by ambient music, progressive rock, and jazz opposed to their previous sound. In addition, Spirit of Eden would also turn out to arguably be Talk Talk’s most experimental record by a fair margin. Most of the long rabbit holes of intense sonic tension that Talk Talk will send their listeners into with this record tend to have more of a dismal and dissipated energy. Some of the eerie chords on “The Rainbow” could sound more threatening while some of the long instrumental sections on tracks like “Desire” go from more of a gritty feel to epic instrumental conclusions. Either way, Spirit of Eden is an ambient experience like no other and a very sentimental and psychedelic listen.
